The PCA3 (Prostate CAncer gene 3) test is not a replacement for prostate specific antigen (PSA). It is an additional tool to more accurately predict prostate biopsy outcome. It is helpful for deciding if biopsy is really needed in men suspected of having prostate cancer (PCa), i.e. those with a suspicious digital rectal examination (DRE) and/or elevated PSA (2.5-10 ng/mL) and those with one or more negative biopsies If a biopsy confirms PCa, it may also help in predicting the pre-operative risk of PCa progression/severity of the tumour and the need for early treatment.
