The PCA3 (Prostate CAncer gene 3) test starts with a digital rectal examination (DRE) of the prostate. You are then asked to urinate after which the urine sample is sent to a laboratory specialised in analysing the urine sample for PCA3. The laboratory determines the PCA3 Score which indicates the likelihood that you will have prostate cancer during a prostate biopsy. It will usually take approximately 1 week before your doctor receives the PCA3 Score from the laboratory. Your doctor will make an appointment to discuss the interpretation of the PCA3 Score and decide whether or not you should have a prostate biopsy to determine the presence of prostate cancer cells
